God’s Work, God’s Way (Exodus 25:8–9)
2026 Bible Reading: Exodus 25–28
PRINCIPLE: Accomplish God’s work according to His revealed purpose and pattern. (Exodus 25:8–9)
“And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. 9 Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it.” – Exodus 25:8–9
Context
After establishing His covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai, God called Moses up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone and further instructions for the nation (Exodus 24:12–18). God first commanded Moses to receive voluntary contributions from the people. The gold, silver, bronze, fine cloth, wood, oil, spices, and precious stones they willingly offered would be used to construct and furnish the tabernacle (Exodus 25:1–7).
Having provided the required materials, God revealed why the sanctuary must be built and how the Israelites were to build it.
Exposition
God commanded, “Let them make me a sanctuary” (Exodus 25:8a). The word translated “sanctuary” (Hebrew: miqdāš) referred to a holy place set apart for God. Although the Israelites would willingly contribute the materials and participate in the construction, the sanctuary belonged to God and was to be devoted entirely to Him. They were not merely building an impressive structure or creating a place for religious activity. They were constructing a holy place for God according to the purpose He had established.
God then revealed that purpose: “that I may dwell in their midst” (Exodus 25:8b). The verb translated “dwell” (šākan) means to dwell, settle, or reside. This did not mean that the sovereign God could be confined within a physical structure. Rather, He graciously chose to manifest His presence among His covenant people. The sanctuary would signify that God was present with Israel and remained at the center of their worship, life, and journey.
After revealing the purpose of the sanctuary, God specified the pattern they must follow: “Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture” (Exodus 25:9a). The word translated “tabernacle” (miškān) means “dwelling place” and comes from the same Hebrew root as šākan, “to dwell.” The structure Israel would build was called the “dwelling place” because God had chosen to dwell among His people.
The verb translated “show” (marʾeh) is the Hiphil, or causative, form of rāʾâ, “to see.” It means “to cause someone to see” and, in this context, “to show” or “to reveal.” The design did not originate from Moses or the Israelites. God Himself caused Moses to see what they were required to build. The word translated “pattern” (tabnît) referred to the divinely revealed plan or model for the tabernacle and all its furnishings. God revealed not only what they should build but also how they should build it.
God concluded, “so you shall make it” (Exodus 25:9b). The people were responsible for carrying out the work, but they had no authority to alter the purpose or pattern God had revealed. Their willing contributions, craftsmanship, and labor had to be governed by careful obedience to His instructions.
Therefore, Exodus 25:8–9 means that God commanded Israel to construct a holy dwelling place so that He might manifest His presence among them, and they were required to accomplish that work precisely according to the purpose and pattern He revealed.
Theological Reflection
Exodus 25:8–9 teaches that our holy God graciously desires to dwell among His covenant people. God had redeemed Israel from Egypt and brought them to Himself at Mount Sinai. His presence among them was an expression of His grace, covenant faithfulness, and desire for an abiding relationship with His people. Yet His nearness did not diminish His holiness. Because He is holy, His people must approach Him according to His revealed will. (Exodus 29:45–46; Leviticus 19:2)
God’s presence among Israel anticipated the fuller revelation of His presence through Jesus Christ. The eternal Word became flesh and dwelt among humanity, revealing God’s glory and making Him known. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, believers are reconciled to God and brought into His presence with confidence. (John 1:14; Hebrews 10:19–22)
Furthermore, those who belong to Christ are now indwelt by the Holy Spirit and joined together as God’s dwelling place. God is not confined to a building, and the church is not merely a physical structure. God dwells among His people by His Spirit, forming them into a holy community that displays His character and accomplishes His purposes in the world. (1 Corinthians 3:16–17; Ephesians 2:21–22)
This passage also teaches that God determines both the purpose and pattern of the work He entrusts to His people. Human creativity, ability, and resources are valuable, but they must remain submitted to His revealed Word. God’s work must be accomplished for His presence and glory, according to the instructions and principles He has given. (1 Chronicles 28:11–12; Hebrews 8:5)
This passage gives a clear progression from God’s presence to God’s purpose, from God’s purpose to God’s pattern, and from God’s pattern to His people’s obedience. God desired to dwell among Israel, commanded them to prepare a holy place, revealed the design they must follow, and required them to build accordingly. Because God determines the purpose and pattern of the work He entrusts to us, we must accomplish God’s work according to His revealed purpose and pattern.
Applications
First, Keep God Central in Your Life
“That I may dwell in their midst.” – Exodus 25:8b
God did not intend His presence to remain at the edge of Israel’s life. The tabernacle stood among the people and reminded them that He was the One who had redeemed, guided, provided for, and sustained them. Their worship, relationships, responsibilities, and journey had to be ordered around His presence.
Keep God at the center of every area of your life. Do not confine Him to your church activities or devotional time. Acknowledge His presence in your family, relationships, work, business, school, ministry, plans, finances, and decisions. Reject anything that competes for His rightful place, and organize your life around knowing, honoring, and obeying Him.
Second, Pursue God’s Given Purpose
“Let them make me a sanctuary.” – Exodus 25:8a
The sanctuary was to be built for God and according to the purpose He had established. The Israelites did not determine what the structure was ultimately for. Their contributions, abilities, and labor were devoted to accomplishing the work God had entrusted to them for His glory.
Seek God’s purpose before committing your time, resources, and strength to any undertaking. Ask why He has entrusted particular people, responsibilities, opportunities, and resources to you. Refuse to use His gifts merely to promote yourself or pursue personal recognition. Direct everything He has provided toward serving His people and fulfilling His purposes.
Third, Follow God’s Revealed Pattern
“Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it.” – Exodus 25:9
Moses and the Israelites were not free to redesign the tabernacle according to their imagination or convenience. Good intentions, willing contributions, and excellent craftsmanship could not replace careful obedience. Faithfulness required them to carry out God’s work according to what He had revealed.
Submit your methods, plans, and decisions to the truth and principles of God’s Word. Do not allow personal preference, popular opinion, cultural pressure, or convenience to replace biblical obedience. Study His Word carefully, seek His wisdom prayerfully, and carry out every responsibility faithfully. Accomplish God’s work in the way that honors God.
