Pray for Deeper Understanding (Colossians 1:9)
2026 Bible Reading: Colossians 1–2
PRINCIPLE: Pray continually for a deeper understanding of God’s will. (Colossians 1:9)
“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” – Colossians 1:9
Context
Paul thanked God for the Colossians’ faith in Christ Jesus and love for all the saints. These grew from the hope laid up for them in heaven, which they had heard through the gospel. Epaphras, who had taught them, reported their love in the Spirit to Paul and his companions. This evidence of God’s grace prompted thanksgiving and continued prayer for their spiritual growth. (Colossians 1:3–8)
Paul then described his prayer that God would fill them with the knowledge of His will so they could live in a manner worthy of the Lord. Such a life would bear fruit in good works, grow in the knowledge of God, demonstrate endurance and patience, and express thanksgiving to the Father. His prayer connected understanding God’s will with conduct that pleased Him. (Colossians 1:9–12)
Exposition
Paul wrote, “And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you” (Colossians 1:9a). Upon hearing the report of the Colossians’ faith in Christ and love for fellow believers, Paul and his companions began praying consistently for their continued spiritual growth. The expression “have not ceased” (Greek: pauō, with the negative) described regular prayer rather than uninterrupted speaking to God.
Paul specified his request to God, “asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will” (Colossians 1:9b). The expression “be filled” (plēroō) meant “to be made full.” The passive form presented the Colossians as recipients, with God as the One who would fill them. Paul asked God to deepen the spiritual understanding of believers whose faith was already bearing fruit.
The content of this filling was “the knowledge of his will.” The word translated “knowledge” (epignōsis) referred here to knowing God’s will. The term “will” (thelēma) described what God desired His people to do. In the following verse, Paul explained that this knowledge would enable them to live in a manner worthy of the Lord. His concern included understanding God’s purposes in Christ and recognizing the conduct appropriate to those who belonged to Him. (Colossians 1:10–14)
Paul further described this knowledge as being “in all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Colossians 1:9c). “Wisdom” (sophia) described the capacity to understand and act accordingly, while “understanding” (synesis) emphasized comprehension or discernment. Together, these closely related terms described the ability to grasp God’s truth and recognize its implications for life.
The adjective “spiritual” (pneumatikos) identified the Holy Spirit as the source of this wisdom and understanding. Paul prayed for Spirit-given discernment that would enable the Colossians to understand God’s will and live to please the Lord.
Colossians 1:9 means that Paul and his companions consistently prayed for God to fill the Colossians with the knowledge of His will, accompanied by Spirit-given wisdom and discernment that would guide them to live in a manner pleasing to God.
Theological Reflection
Colossians 1:9 teaches that believers should keep praying for one another’s spiritual growth. Seeing faith and love in others gives them reason to thank God and pray for continued growth. Through consistent prayer, believers acknowledge their dependence upon God to help others understand His will and live to please Him. (Ephesians 1:15–17; Philippians 1:9–11)
Believers need to understand God’s will. Through His Word, God reveals His purposes and teaches His people how to live. Understanding His will helps them desire what pleases Him and make decisions that honor Him. As their understanding grows, believers are responsible to obey what He reveals. (Romans 12:2; 2 Timothy 3:16–17)
The Holy Spirit enables believers to understand what God reveals through His Word. He gives them wisdom to recognize His will and apply His truth in daily life. As believers study Scripture, they need the Spirit’s help to understand its teaching and obey it in their decisions and conduct. (1 Corinthians 2:12–13; Colossians 3:16)
God’s people need to keep growing in their understanding of His will. Through the Holy Spirit, God helps them understand His Word and discern how to obey Him in their circumstances. Believers should continually pray for one another to know His will more deeply and live in ways that please Him.
Applications
First, Pray Consistently for Others
“We have not ceased to pray for you.” – Colossians 1:9a
Paul’s example shows that spiritual care includes consistent intercession. Those who are growing in faith still need God’s continuing work in their lives. Their progress should encourage us to thank Him and keep praying for their growth.
Remember your family, fellow believers, church leaders, and those you disciple regularly in prayer. Thank God for evidence of His grace in their lives. Continue interceding even when no urgent difficulty is apparent. Ask Him to deepen their understanding and strengthen their faithfulness.
Second, Pray to Know God’s Will More Deeply
“Asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will.” – Colossians 1:9b
Paul’s specific request helps us recognize an essential spiritual need. Believers need to understand what God desires so their lives can reflect His purposes. Praying for this knowledge acknowledges that God must teach and guide His people.
Include spiritual understanding in your prayers for others. Ask God to help them understand His Word and recognize what obedience requires in their responsibilities and decisions. Make this request for yourself as well. Read Scripture with a willingness to receive His instruction and submit your preferences to His will.
Third, Pray for Wisdom from the Spirit
“In all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” – Colossians 1:9c
Knowing God’s will involves wisdom and discernment that the Holy Spirit gives. His work enables believers to understand God’s truth and recognize how it should shape their conduct. This wisdom serves the purpose of living in a way that pleases the Lord.
Ask God to give you and those you pray for wisdom through the Holy Spirit. Bring specific decisions and responsibilities before Him. Examine your choices in light of Scripture, seek counsel consistent with its teaching, and act upon what God has made clear. Let your growing understanding lead to obedience and a life pleasing to God.
