Trust God Through Distress and Testing (Psalm 81:7)
2026 Bible Reading: Psalm 81–83
PRINCIPLE: Trust God in distress and remain faithful through testing. (Psalm 81:7)
“In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; Trust God Through Distress and Testing (Psalm 81:7)I tested you at the waters of Meribah.” – Psalm 81:7
Context
Psalm 81 opened with a call for Israel to celebrate God with joyful singing and musical instruments. The festival recalled His deliverance of His people from Egypt. As the celebration unfolded, God addressed Israel, reminding them that He had removed the burdens of their slavery and responded when they cried for help. (Psalm 81:1–7)
God then called His people to listen to Him and reject foreign gods. Although He had rescued and provided for them, they refused to obey. The psalm concluded with His expressed desire for Israel to walk in His ways and receive His provision. Remembering their deliverance called them to renewed trust and obedience. (Psalm 81:8–16)
Exposition
God recalled Israel’s suffering when He said, “In distress you called, and I delivered you” (Psalm 81:7a). The word translated “distress” (Hebrew: ṣārâ) described trouble, need, or anguish. Here, it referred to the suffering of the Israelites under Egyptian bondage. Their forced labor had brought them deep misery, and their groaning had risen to God (Exodus 2:23–25). They “called” (qārāʾ), appealing to Him for help, and He “delivered” (ḥālaṣ) them, rescuing them from their bondage. Their freedom from slavery resulted from His intervention.
God continued, “I answered you in the secret place of thunder” (Psalm 81:7b). The word translated “answered” (ʿānâ) described responding to an appeal. His answer included action on behalf of His people. The thundercloud imagery portrayed His majestic presence, both concealed and revealed through the storm. It recalled the powerful manifestations accompanying Israel’s deliverance and encounter with Him. (Psalm 77:16–20; Exodus 19:16–19)
At the end of the verse, God reminded Israel of their testing when He said, “I tested you at the waters of Meribah” (Psalm 81:7c). The word translated “tested” (bāḥan) meant to examine or put to the test. After deliverance, Israel faced a shortage of water. This difficulty revealed whether they would continue trusting the God who had rescued them. Instead, they quarreled and questioned His presence among them (Exodus 17:1–7).
In Psalm 81:7, God recalled how He had answered Israel’s cry by rescuing them and manifesting His powerful presence. He then tested whether they would continue trusting Him when they faced difficulty at Meribah.
Theological Reflection
Psalm 81:7 teaches that God hears His people’s cries and acts with power on their behalf. Their distress gives them reason to seek Him, acknowledging their dependence upon His mercy. Because He hears and is able to help, believers can bring their needs before Him with confidence in His care. (Psalm 34:17; Hebrews 4:16)
God’s past faithfulness provides grounds for continued confidence when new difficulties arise. His deliverance reveals His power and care. Believers can remember His works and trust Him even when present circumstances remain unresolved. His help may include sustaining grace through continuing hardship. (Psalm 77:11–14; 2 Corinthians 12:9)
Such confidence must continue through testing. God’s people may encounter hardship after experiencing His provision, and their responses reveal whether they trust His character and submit to His Word. Trials provide occasions for faith to grow in steadfastness. Remembering His faithfulness helps believers resist unbelief and continue obeying Him when difficulties arise. (James 1:2–4; Hebrews 3:7–12)
The God who hears and delivers remains worthy of trust when further difficulties come. His past care gives His people reason to seek Him confidently, while testing calls for continuing dependence and obedience. Because His faithfulness remains unchanged, His people can trust Him in distress and remain faithful through testing.
Applications
First, Call on God in Distress
“In distress you called, and I delivered you.” – Psalm 81:7a
Israel’s cry arose from suffering they could not overcome themselves. God’s response showed His care and power to rescue. We likewise depend upon Him and can bring our needs before Him with confidence in His mercy.
We need to identify the concerns weighing upon us today and bring our personal and family needs, ministry pressures, financial responsibilities, and uncertainties honestly before God. As we ask for His help and wisdom, we should seek counsel consistent with Scripture and take responsible steps while depending upon His care.
Second, Recall God’s Faithful Response
“I will remember the deeds of the LORD.” – Psalm 77:11a
Remembering God’s works strengthens confidence in His character. Israel’s deliverance provided reason to trust Him beyond Egypt. We likewise need to remember how He has cared for us so that present difficulties do not cause us to doubt His faithfulness.
We should thank God for specific ways He has sustained and provided for us. Recording answered prayers and recalling them when anxiety grows can strengthen our trust. We can share these reminders with our families or those we disciple, entrusting our present needs to Him and submitting our expectations and timing to His wisdom.
Third, Remain Faithful Through the Test
“I tested you at the waters of Meribah.” – Psalm 81:7c
Deliverance did not remove every difficulty from Israel’s journey. Meribah exposed their unwillingness to trust God when another need arose. Testing likewise calls us to continue depending upon Him and obeying His Word.
We need to examine our responses to unresolved difficulties and reject grumbling that questions God’s faithfulness. As we speak honestly to Him about our struggles, we must receive correction from Scripture and fulfill the responsibilities He has made clear. We depend upon the Holy Spirit for strength to obey while we wait.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
