Keep God’s Word and Live (Proverbs 7:2)
2026 Bible Reading: Proverbs 7
PRINCIPLE: Obey and treasure God’s Word to walk in the way of life. (Proverbs 7:2)
“Keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye.” – Proverbs 7:2
Context
Proverbs 7 continued a father’s instruction concerning the dangers of adultery. He urged his son to treasure his commandments, write his teaching on his heart, and regard wisdom and understanding as intimate companions. This instruction would protect him from the seductive words of an adulteress. (Proverbs 6:20–35; 7:1–5)
The father then described a young man who lacked judgment and wandered near her house. Persuaded by her words, he followed her without recognizing the danger to his life. The chapter concluded with a warning to listen carefully and avoid her destructive path. The opening appeal showed that the son needed to obey wise instruction and treasure it in his heart to be protected from this destructive path. (Proverbs 7:6–27)
Exposition
The father began, “Keep my commandments and live” (Proverbs 7:2a). The Hebrew word translated “keep” (šāmar) can mean to guard, preserve, or observe. Here, it meant carefully observing the father’s instruction and allowing it to govern the son’s conduct. The word translated “commandments” (miṣwāh) described authoritative directions. Although also used for God’s commands, it referred here to the father’s teaching, which reflected God’s moral requirements, particularly faithfulness in marriage.
The father connected obedience with its outcome through the words “and live” (Proverbs 7:2a). The word translated “live” (ḥāyâ) meant to live or remain alive. Although expressed as a command, it conveyed the intended result of keeping the father’s instruction. Obedience would guide the son toward life and protect him from the destructive consequences of adultery.
The young man’s encounter illustrated how adultery endangered his life. Wise instruction offered protection from this destructive path, without guaranteeing that obedient people would never suffer. (Proverbs 7:23, 27)
The father continued, “keep my teaching as the apple of your eye” (Proverbs 7:2b). The word translated “teaching” (tôrâ) could refer to instruction or law. Here, it described the father’s instruction. In the Hebrew text of Proverbs 7:2, the second line carried forward the command to keep from the first line, emphasizing the care with which the son should preserve what he had received.
The expression “apple of your eye” (Proverbs 7:2b) referred to the pupil (ʾîšôn). It pictured something cherished, precious, and carefully protected. The father urged his son to guard his teaching with the same care he would give his own eye. This instruction deserved a treasured place in his heart, where it could guide his decisions when temptation arose.
The following appeal to bind the teachings on his fingers and write them on his heart reinforced their lasting place in his life. Wisdom was to become part of his thinking and character, shaping his response to the seductive words he would encounter. (Proverbs 7:3–5)
Therefore, Proverbs 7:2 called the son to obey his father’s wise commandments and cherish his teaching as something precious. Receiving and preserving this instruction would guide him toward life and protect him from the destructive path of adultery.
Theological Reflection
Proverbs 7:2 teaches that wisdom consistent with God’s truth calls for careful obedience. God’s instruction provides a trustworthy standard for desires, relationships, and conduct. Believers receive its benefit as they allow His truth to govern their choices and become evident in their actions. (Psalm 119:4; James 1:22)
Obedience to God’s instruction directs His people toward life and protects them from destructive choices. Sin can make wrongdoing appear desirable while concealing its consequences. God’s wisdom exposes that deception and guides believers toward conduct that honors Him and preserves their integrity. (Proverbs 6:23; Proverbs 19:16)
This protection also involves cherishing God’s Word and retaining its teaching in the heart. What believers treasure influences their attention, desires, and decisions. Sustained delight in Scripture helps His truth remain present in their thinking, strengthening their resistance when temptation arises. (Psalm 119:11; Psalm 119:97)
God’s instruction deserves both faithful obedience and a treasured place in the heart. Its wisdom exposes the danger of sin and guides His people toward conduct that honors Him. Believers walk in the way of life as they obey His Word and carefully preserve the truth He has entrusted to them.
Applications
First, Obey God’s Word Faithfully
“Keep my commandments and live.” – Proverbs 7:2a
The father called his son to put wise instruction into practice. Likewise, receiving God’s Word involves allowing its truth to govern our conduct. Knowing what Scripture teaches brings a responsibility to respond faithfully in both private choices and public responsibilities.
Obey God’s commands even when doing so requires giving up something you desire. Pursue purity in your relationships, conversations, and online activity. Do not justify sinful behavior by saying it is harmless or that no one will know. Depend upon the Holy Spirit for strength to follow God’s Word faithfully.
Second, Trust God’s Word Confidently
“For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life.” – Proverbs 6:23
The father’s instruction illuminated dangers the young man failed to recognize. God’s Word likewise helps us see beyond temptation’s immediate appeal and consider where our choices lead. His warnings give us reason to trust His wisdom, even when obedience requires refusing something we desire.
Evaluate attractive opportunities and relationships in the light of Scripture. Refuse to assume that secrecy makes wrongdoing safe. Move away from situations that weaken your resolve to obey. Seek counsel from a mature believer when you need help recognizing danger or maintaining wise boundaries.
Third, Treasure God’s Word Carefully
“Keep my teaching as the apple of your eye.” – Proverbs 7:2b
The image of the pupil emphasized the precious value of instruction and the care it deserved. God’s Word should hold a cherished place in our hearts. Giving sustained attention to its teaching helps us remember and apply His truth when competing desires arise.
Fight for your time with God and His Word. Read carefully, reflect prayerfully, and intentionally share with others what He teaches you. Memorize a verse that addresses a temptation or decision you face, and return to it throughout the day.
