Redeemed to Be Holy (Leviticus 11:45)

2026 Bible Reading: Leviticus 10–12

PRINCIPLE: God’s redeemed people are called to reflect His holiness. (Leviticus 11:45)

“For I am the LORD who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.” – Leviticus 11:45

Context

In Leviticus 11:1–40, the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron and instructed them to teach the Israelites which animals they could eat and which they were to regard as unclean. He also explained how contact with animal carcasses could make them ceremonially unclean and what they needed to do to become clean again.

The chapter concluded with a warning against defiling themselves through the creatures God had forbidden them to eat. These instructions connected the food laws with Israel’s calling to holiness and summarized the distinctions they were to observe between clean and unclean animals. (Leviticus 11:41–47)

Exposition

The LORD said, “For I am the LORD” (Leviticus 11:45a). He identified Himself as the One whose authority governed Israel’s life. His instructions concerning food and uncleanness rested upon His identity and His relationship with Israel.

He continued, “who brought you up out of the land of Egypt” (Leviticus 11:45b). The expression translated “brought you up” (Hebrew: ʿālâ, Hiphil) meant to bring or lead up. It referred to the LORD’s deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt. Their life as His people began with His saving initiative. He had already delivered them before giving these instructions concerning how they were to live.

The LORD then declared the purpose of that deliverance in the words “to be your God” (Leviticus 11:45c). The word translated “to be” (hāyâ) expressed the intended relationship between the LORD and Israel. He brought them out of slavery to live as His covenant people under His care and authority.

The LORD then commanded them, “You shall therefore be holy” (Leviticus 11:45d). The word translated “holy” (qādôš) described those set apart for God. Israel was to live as a people devoted to Him, obeying His instructions concerning clean and unclean animals. These requirements showed that their devotion to God was to extend to daily life, including what they ate and how they responded to ceremonial uncleanness.

The LORD’s final declaration supplied the foundation for this calling: “for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:45e). The LORD’s holiness distinguished Him from everything common and defiled. His people were to reflect His holy character by obeying His commands.

Therefore, Leviticus 11:45 meant that the LORD’s deliverance of Israel established a covenant relationship that required them to live as His holy people. Their obedience to His instructions concerning clean and unclean was to express their belonging to the holy God who had redeemed them.

Theological Reflection

Leviticus 11:45 teaches that God’s gracious redemption establishes the foundation for His people’s holy living. God delivers His people and calls them to live consistently with His saving purpose. Through Jesus Christ, believers are redeemed from bondage to sin and called to devote their lives to Him. (Romans 6:22; Titus 2:14)

Because redemption brings believers into a relationship with God, they are called to live under His authority in every part of life. His authority extends to their daily choices, relationships, and responsibilities. Those purchased through Christ’s sacrifice are called to honor God with their bodies and offer their lives in His service. (1 Corinthians 6:19–20; Romans 12:1)

God’s holy character remains the standard for His redeemed people. Israel’s dietary distinctions are no longer binding upon believers in Christ, but the call to holiness continues. Believers express their devotion to God through conduct that conforms to His revealed will, turning from the evil that defiles the heart and pursuing obedience in every area of life. (Mark 7:18–23; 1 Peter 1:14–16)

God redeems His people to live in relationship with Him, and that relationship calls for conduct consistent with His character. His saving grace provides the reason for holy living, and His holy character determines how His people should live. Those who belong to Him are called to reflect His holiness in their daily lives.

Applications

First, Remember God’s Redeeming Grace

“For I am the LORD who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” – Leviticus 11:45a–b

The LORD reminded Israel of His deliverance before stating their responsibility to be holy. Likewise, our pursuit of holiness rests upon what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ. Remembering His saving grace nurtures gratitude and strengthens our desire to obey Him.

Thank God for redeeming you through Christ’s death and resurrection. Reflect on the bondage from which He has delivered you and the new life He has given you. When obedience becomes difficult, remember the cost of your redemption and respond to His grace with unconditional obedience.

Second, Live as Those Who Belong to God

“To be your God.” – Leviticus 11:45c

God delivered Israel to live in covenant relationship with Him. Through Christ, we also belong to God and live under His loving authority. This relationship gives purpose to our daily responsibilities and calls us to honor Him with everything He has entrusted to us.

Bring your plans, relationships, finances, and responsibilities under God’s authority. Examine whether your ordinary choices express devotion to Him. Fulfill your commitments honestly, treat others with care, and use your time and resources faithfully. Let your belonging to God shape how you live at home, at work, in school, and in ministry.

Third, Reflect God’s Holy Character

“You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.” – Leviticus 11:45d–e

God’s character establishes the standard for His people’s conduct. Although we are not required to observe Israel’s dietary distinctions, we remain called to holiness in all our conduct. Our devotion to Him should become evident in choices shaped by His Word.

Examine your thoughts, words, habits, and relationships in the light of Scripture. Turn from dishonesty, sexual impurity, bitterness, and other practices that dishonor God. Pursue truthfulness, purity, patience, and love. Depend upon the Holy Spirit for strength, and seek accountability where recurring temptation has weakened your obedience.

Prayer

Guide our daily choices through Your Word, and strengthen us to obey You faithfully. Enable us to use the time, resources, and opportunities You have entrusted to us for Your purposes and glory.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
