The Righteous King We Need (Jeremiah 23:5)

PRINCIPLE: Submit to Christ, our righteous King. (Jeremiah 23:5)

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.” —Jeremiah 23:5

Jeremiah 22 recorded God’s judgment against Judah’s kings because they had refused to rule with justice and righteousness. Instead of defending the weak and oppressed, they had pursued dishonest gain, shed innocent blood, and used their authority for personal benefit.

Jeremiah 23:1–4 described these rulers as shepherds who had destroyed, scattered, and neglected God’s flock. God declared that He would punish them, gather the remnant of His people, and appoint shepherds who would care for them faithfully. Against the failure of Judah’s kings, God then promised to provide the righteous King His people truly needed.

The words, “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:5a) pointed to a future work of God that was certain to take place. Although the Davidic monarchy was about to collapse, the LORD had not abandoned His covenant with David.

Then God declared, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch” (Jeremiah 23:5b). The coming King would not gain His position through human ambition or political maneuvering. But God Himself said “I will raise up” (Hebrew: wa-hăqimōtî) this King. This phrase signified God Himself would cause Him to arise, appoint Him, and establish Him from the Davidic line.

God described Him as “a righteous Branch” (tsemaḥ tsaddiq). The word “Branch” (tsemaḥ) referred to a shoot or descendant growing from what appeared to be a ruined royal house. The word “righteous” (tsaddiq) described one whose character and conduct were found to be right, just, upright, and faithful. In this setting, it also identified Him as the legitimate and rightful descendant of David.

Unlike Judah’s kings, whose lives and leadership had failed God’s standards, this coming King would possess both the rightful claim to David’s throne and the righteous character necessary to rule God’s people.

God declared “and he shall reign as king and deal wisely” (Jeremiah 23:5c). The phrase “shall reign as king” (u-malak melekh) emphasized that He would genuinely exercise royal authority. God would establish His rule, and no power could prevent or overthrow it. This King would also “deal wisely” (ve-hiskil). He would act with perfect insight and successfully accomplish everything God intended. Unlike Judah’s kings, whose plans had failed because of pride and disobedience, His rule would never fail.

This King “shall execute justice (ve-asah mishpat) and righteousness (u-tsedaqah) in the land” (Jeremiah 23:5d). He would render right decisions, defend those whose rights had been denied, preserve right order, and set what was wrong right. Unlike Judah’s kings, the promised King would actively establish justice and righteousness throughout His reign.

This promise was most likely proclaimed during the reign of Zedekiah, whose name meant “The LORD is my righteousness.” Yet his leadership had contradicted the meaning of his name. The coming King would be called “The LORD Our Righteousness,” revealing that the LORD Himself was the source of the righteousness His people needed.

Theological Reflection

This prophecy in Jeremiah 23:5 was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah and rightful heir to David’s throne. Through His death and resurrection, He secured salvation for His people, and when He returns, He will bring this prophecy to its complete fulfillment through His righteous reign. (Luke 1:32–33; Revelation 19:11–16)

Jesus Christ possesses perfect wisdom, righteousness, and authority. His judgments are always right, His purposes never fail, and His rule can never be overthrown. Unlike human rulers, He is never corrupted by sin or limited by weakness. He alone is fully worthy to govern all things. (Isaiah 9:6–7; Hebrews 1:8–12)

Christ is also the only source of the righteousness sinners need. No one can become acceptable to God through good works, religious activity, or faithful service. Through faith in Christ, believers receive the righteousness they could never produce for themselves. (Romans 3:21–24; 2 Corinthians 5:21)

Christ is our rightful King, the source of our righteousness, and the One whose reign endures forever. Since His wisdom is perfect, His authority is absolute, and His ways are always right, we must submit every part of our lives to Him. Therefore, we must submit to Christ, our righteous King.

Applications

First, submit to His wisdom.

“…and he shall reign as king and deal wisely.”

Christ possesses perfect wisdom, and His purposes never fail. He understands the will of God completely and accomplishes it without error. Since He is our righteous King, His wisdom must govern every area of our lives.

Seek Christ’s will rather than depend on personal desires, human wisdom, or convenience. Allow His Word and the Holy Spirit to direct your decisions, relationships, responsibilities, and plans. If you are entrusted with leadership, keep every decision under His authority and shaped by His truth.

Second, reflect His righteousness.

“and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.” —Jeremiah 23:5d

Christ’s character and conduct are always right, just, upright, and faithful. His rule protects the vulnerable, upholds what is right, and sets what is wrong right. Since we live under His authority, His righteousness must shape how we relate to others and fulfill our responsibilities.

Pursue what is truthful, fair, and faithful in every area of life. Serve rather than exploit, speak truth rather than mislead, protect rather than neglect, and seek what honors God rather than what advances personal ambition.

Third, trust His unfailing reign.

“He shall reign as king.” —Jeremiah 23:5c

Christ’s reign can never be overthrown. Human leaders, institutions, and systems remain limited, but His authority is absolute, His purposes are certain, and His rule endures forever. He will accomplish all that He has promised and judge every work rightly.

Place your ultimate confidence in Christ rather than in people, organizations, influence, or your own ability. Serve faithfully without fear, remain accountable for every responsibility He has entrusted to you, and trust Him to accomplish His purposes until He returns.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for giving us Jesus Christ, our righteous King. His wisdom is perfect, His judgments are always right, and His reign can never be overthrown. Thank You that through His death and resurrection, He secured our salvation and became the righteousness we could never produce for ourselves.

Empower us by Your Holy Spirit to submit every part of our lives to Christ. Teach us to seek His wisdom through Your Word, obey His will, and trust His purposes even when we cannot yet see what He is doing.

Help us reflect His righteousness in our relationships, responsibilities, leadership, and use of every resource You have entrusted to us. Keep us from selfish ambition, dishonesty, injustice, and the misuse of authority. Enable us to serve faithfully, speak truth, and protect the weak and vulnerable.

Keep our confidence firmly anchored in Christ as we await His return and the full establishment of His righteous reign.
