Trust God’s Powerful Word (Luke 1:37–38)

2026 Bible Reading: Luke 1–2

PRINCIPLE: Trust God’s powerful word and surrender fully to His will. (Luke 1:37–38)

“‘For nothing will be impossible with God.’ 38 And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.” – Luke 1:37–38

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary in Nazareth and announced that she would conceive and give birth to Jesus. He would be called the Son of the Most High, receive the throne of David, reign forever, and establish a kingdom that would never end. (Luke 1:26–33)

When Mary asked how this would happen since she was a virgin, Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her. He then told her that her previously barren relative Elizabeth was already six months pregnant, confirming God’s ability to accomplish everything He had declared. (Luke 1:34–36)

Gabriel gave Mary the assurance, “For nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:37). The word translated “nothing” (ouk) represents the emphatic Greek construction (ouk adynatēsei para tou theou pan rhēma), meaning that no word or thing at all would be impossible with God. The word rhēma could refer to something spoken and, reflecting Hebrew usage, also to a matter or event. Thus, the verse may also be translated, “No word from God will be powerless” (Marshall). God’s word is not an empty declaration. It carries His power to bring about what He has spoken.

The expression “will be impossible” (adynatēsei) came from a verb meaning to be powerless, unable, or incapable of being accomplished. Gabriel was assuring Mary that no word, promise, or purpose from God would ever lack the power necessary for its fulfillment. Elizabeth’s pregnancy demonstrated this truth (Luke 1:36), while Mary’s miraculous conception would reveal it in an even greater way. What was impossible through human ability would be accomplished through the supernatural and creative work of the Holy Spirit.

Because God possessed the power to fulfill His word, Mary responded, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord” (Luke 1:38a). The word “behold” (idou) called attention to the declaration that followed and gave it strong emphasis. It expressed Mary’s readiness to present herself before God: “Here I am.” She did not merely acknowledge that God could fulfill His word; she made herself available for Him to accomplish it through her.

Mary identified herself as the Lord’s “servant” (doulē), a word referring to a female slave or bondwoman. It could also be used by someone of humble standing when addressing a person of higher rank. By using this designation, Mary acknowledged the Lord’s complete authority over her life. She belonged to Him and placed herself entirely at His disposal.

Mary then declared, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38b). The expression “Let it be” (genoito) conveyed her willing acceptance of God’s will despite the possible personal cost. She could face misunderstanding from Joseph, damage to her reputation, and rejection by her community. Yet she submitted to what God had declared because she trusted both His power and His word. After Mary expressed her believing surrender, Gabriel departed.

Gabriel assured Mary that no word from God would be powerless. Mary responded to God’s powerful word by humbly placing herself at His disposal and willingly submitting to His will.

Theological Reflection

Luke 1:37-38 reveals that God possesses unlimited power to accomplish everything He determines. His purposes are never restrained by human weakness, natural limitations, or circumstances that appear impossible. What lies completely beyond human ability remains fully within His sovereign power. (Genesis 18:14; Jeremiah 32:17)

God’s word carries the certainty of its fulfillment because it proceeds from His sovereign power and unchanging faithfulness. His promises do not ultimately depend on human ability, favorable circumstances, or natural possibility. No word or purpose that truly comes from Him can prove powerless or fail to accomplish what He intends. (Isaiah 55:10–11; Hebrews 6:17–18)

Genuine faith in God’s powerful word is expressed through humble surrender and willing obedience. Those who acknowledge God’s sovereign authority recognize that they belong to Him and remain completely available for His purposes, even when His ways are not fully understood or obedience involves personal cost. (Romans 12:1–2; Philippians 2:12–13)

God’s unlimited power and unchanging faithfulness guarantee the fulfillment of His word, while genuine faith in His word produces humble surrender, willing obedience, and complete availability to His sovereign will.

Application

First, rest in God’s unlimited power.

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” – Luke 1:37

God’s power is never diminished by human weakness, natural limitations, or circumstances that appear impossible. What lies completely beyond human ability remains fully within His ability to accomplish. No obstacle can prevent Him from fulfilling His purposes.

Refuse to measure God’s ability by the difficulty of your circumstances. Bring every impossible situation to Him in prayer. Rest in His unlimited power, continue obeying what He has commanded, and trust Him to accomplish what only He can do.

Second, stand firm upon God’s unfailing word.

“My word…shall accomplish that which I purpose.” – Isaiah 55:11

God’s word never lacks the power necessary for its fulfillment. His promises do not become uncertain because circumstances are unfavorable or fulfillment is delayed. What God has truly declared remains completely dependable because He is both powerful and faithful.

Stand firmly upon what God has revealed in Scripture. Resist fear, doubt, and discouragement when circumstances appear to contradict His promises. Keep believing His word, anchor your decisions according to it, and wait confidently for Him to accomplish what He has declared.

Third, yield completely to God’s perfect will.

“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” – Luke 1:38

Genuine faith involves more than believing that God is powerful. It recognizes His authority and willingly places every area of life at His disposal. Surrender may involve uncertainty, being misunderstood by others, or personal cost, but God’s perfect will remains worthy of complete submission.

Present yourself to God as His servant. Release your plans, preferences, reputation, and future into His hands. Obey what He has made clear, remain available for His purposes, and respond to His will with a believing heart: “Let it be to me according to your word.”
