Trusting God for Breakthrough (Joshua 6:2)

2026 Bible Reading: Joshua 6–10

PRINCIPLE: When God has spoken clearly in His Word, surrender fully to Him and obey—He will give you breakthrough in His time and in His way. (Joshua 6:2)

“And the Lord said to Joshua, ‘See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.’” – Joshua 6:2

Jericho was tightly shut. The gates were closed because of Israel. No one went out and no one came in (Joshua 6:1). The city stood as a fortified military stronghold guarding the eastern ascent into the highlands of Canaan. It was the first major obstacle inside the land. If Israel was to move further west and divide the territory, Jericho had to fall.

At the end of Joshua 5, Joshua encountered the Commander of the LORD’s army (Joshua 5:13–15). The conquest was not ultimately Joshua’s campaign but the LORD’s. As chapter 6 opened, there was no description of military planning from Joshua. Instead, the LORD spoke first. Before any visible action began, the divine word was given.

Joshua 6:2 recorded God’s decisive statement: “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.” At that moment, Jericho still stood. Its walls were intact. Its army was inside. Yet God spoke of the city as already delivered.

The verb translated “have given” came from the Hebrew root natan, meaning “to give,” “to place,” or “to hand over.” It was frequently used in covenant contexts where God gave land or victory to His people. In Genesis 12:7, the LORD said to Abram, “To your offspring I will give this land.” In Exodus 23:31, God promised, “I will give into your hand the inhabitants of the land.” In Deuteronomy 7:2, Moses declared, “When the LORD your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them…”

Here in Joshua 6:2, the Hebrew verb form of natan was expressed in the perfect tense—“I have given.” The future fall of Jericho was described as though it were already accomplished. The giving was certain because it rested on God’s own word.

Jericho, its king, and its strong warriors were said to be placed into Joshua’s hand before a single march around the city had taken place (Joshua 6:2–3). The instructions that followed—processions around the city, priests carrying trumpets, the ark of the covenant at the center—made it clear that this conquest was not driven by conventional military tactics (Joshua 6:3–5, 6–7). It was grounded in the prior declaration of God.

The victory was presented as a gift before it became an experience. It was granted by God before it was ever seen by Israel.

Theological Reflection

Before the walls fell, God had already declared the victory. The declaration preceded the demonstration.

Throughout the Old Testament, when God says He has “given,” it reflects His covenant commitment. The land was “given” long before it was possessed (Genesis 12:7; 15:18). Enemies were “given” into Israel’s hand before battles were fought (Deuteronomy 7:2; Joshua 10:8). The giving originates in God’s sovereign purpose.

In the Book of Joshua, consecration preceded conquest. Covenant obedience was renewed. The Passover was observed (Joshua 5:2–12). There was alignment before advancement.

Consecration → Dependence → Alignment → Breakthrough.

The fall of Jericho did not begin with Israel’s shout in verse 20. It began with God’s Word in verse 2.

“When the trumpets sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so every man charged straight in, and they took the city.” – Joshua 6:20

The collapse of the walls was dramatic, but it was not the starting point. The starting point was God’s declaration.

God speaks. His people align themselves under His Word. In His time, what He has given becomes visible reality.

Applications

First, Submit to God’s Word without condition

Joshua did not negotiate the instruction. He did not ask for alternatives. He did not require visible proof. When God has spoken clearly, obedience is not partial or delayed. We surrender fully, even when His Word challenges our reasoning.

Second, Stay faithful till God gives breakthrough

God’s declaration did not eliminate the process that followed. Israel still marched day after day. The walls did not fall immediately. God’s promises often unfold through perseverance. When He has spoken clearly, we continue in constant obedience until He acts.

Third, Stand secure in God’s promised victory

Jericho fell because God had already given it. The battle began with His word, not with Israel’s shout. The outcome rested on divine initiative, not human strength. What God promises, He fulfills.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for reminding us that victory begins with Your Word. Before walls fall, before outcomes change, before visible breakthroughs happen, You have already spoken. Your promises do not depend on what we see. They rest on who You are and what You can do.

Empower us with Your Holy Spirit to submit to Your Word without condition. Guard us from partial obedience and delayed surrender. When You speak clearly through Scripture, help us respond fully and promptly.

Strengthen us to stay faithful until You give us breakthrough. When nothing seems to change, when the walls still stand, keep us steady and patient. Prevent us from going ahead of You. Preserve us from discouragement. Anchor us in Your Word as we continue to persevere in our obedience and submission to You.

Help us stand secure in Your promised victory. Remind us that what You have given cannot be overturned. What You declare, You will accomplish. What You promise, You will fulfill.

Align our hearts under Your authority. May we always seek to do Your will, nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. Deepen our dependence upon You in every area of our life. Convict us to daily consecration before we can even think about conquering our daily challenges. Grant us confidence that in Your time, You will give us the breakthroughs that honor Your Name. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
