Wait Silently for God Alone (Psalm 62:5–6)
2026 Bible Reading: Psalms 60–62
PRINCIPLE: Wait silently for God alone and rest securely in Him. (Psalm 62:5–6)
“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” – Psalm 62:5–6
Context
Psalm 62 expressed David’s confident trust in the LORD while deceitful enemies attempted to overthrow him. They regarded him as vulnerable, like a leaning wall or tottering fence, and sought to bring him down through deception (Psalm 62:1–4).
David responded by reaffirming that God alone was his rock, salvation, and fortress. He called God’s people to trust Him continually and contrasted God’s security with the uncertainty of human power, dishonest gain, and wealth (Psalm 62:5–12).
Exposition
In Psalm 62:5, David addressed his own soul and commanded, “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence” (Psalm 62:5a). The word translated “alone” (Hebrew: ʾak) is an emphatic and restrictive particle meaning “only.” Its repetition in “He only is my rock” (Psalm 62:6a) emphasizes that God alone was the ultimate object of David’s trust and the exclusive source of his hope and security.
This command repeated and personally applied David’s earlier confession: “For God alone my soul waits in silence” (Psalm 62:1a). In verse 1, David described the settled condition of his soul. In verse 5, he commanded himself to continue waiting silently for God alone. Because his opposition continued, David reaffirmed the trust he had already expressed.
The expression “wait in silence” translates an imperative (dômî) from a verb meaning to be still or keep quiet. David was not commanding himself merely to stop speaking. He was calling his whole inner life to become quiet before God and restrain the fear, impatience, retaliation, and self-reliance that could lead him to act independently of God.
By addressing “O my soul,” David spoke to himself as a whole person, particularly to the thoughts, emotions, desires, and decisions within him. He refused to allow his enemies or circumstances to determine the condition of his heart.
David explained, “for my hope is from him” (Psalm 62:5b). The word translated “hope” (tiqwâ) refers to confident expectation or an optimistic outlook. David’s expectation of deliverance did not arise from evidence that his circumstances were improving. It came from God Himself. Because his salvation came from God, his hope could rest entirely upon Him.
David then declared, “He only is my rock and my salvation” (Psalm 62:6a). The word translated “rock” (ṣûr) refers literally to a rock or rocky height and is used metaphorically for protection, safety, and refuge. Although David’s enemies viewed him as a leaning wall ready to collapse, his life rested upon the unmovable God.
The word translated “salvation” (yešûʿâ) refers to help, deliverance, or God’s saving intervention. David did not merely believe that God could provide some means of escape. He confessed that God Himself was his salvation. His preservation and future depended upon God’s powerful intervention.
David further described God as “my fortress” (Psalm 62:6b). The word translated “fortress” (miśgāb) originally referred to a high or inaccessible place that provided protection from danger. God was David’s secure refuge beyond the reach of his enemies. They could attack him, but they could not overcome the protection God provided.
David therefore concluded, “I shall not be shaken” (Psalm 62:6b). The word translated “shaken” (môṭ) means to sway, stagger, or totter. It appears in the Niphal stem, indicating that David would not be made to stagger or caused to fall by an external force. His enemies might pressure and disturb him, but they could not accomplish his final collapse because his life rested upon the unmovable God.
Taken together, Psalm 62:5–6 reveals that David commanded his whole being to wait quietly for God alone because his confident expectation came from the God who was his unshakable source of protection, deliverance, and security.
Theological Reflection
Psalm 62:5–6 teaches that God alone is the completely dependable foundation of hope and security. Everything created is limited, changeable, and vulnerable to loss. God remains eternally faithful, completely powerful, and unchanging in His character. He alone possesses the strength and faithfulness necessary to sustain His people. (Psalm 20:7; Isaiah 26:4)
Silent waiting arises from confidence in God’s character and saving power. It is neither helpless passivity nor uncertain resignation but the settled rest produced by faith. Because God governs every circumstance with perfect wisdom, His apparent delay never reflects weakness, indifference, or unfaithfulness. (Psalm 37:7; Lamentations 3:25–26)
God is the rock who provides stability, the salvation who delivers, and the fortress who protects. Through Jesus Christ, God has provided complete salvation and established His people upon an unshakable foundation. Opposition, suffering, and uncertainty cannot defeat His saving purposes or separate His people from His faithful care. (Romans 8:35–39; Hebrews 6:19)
God’s unchanging character provides the foundation for confident hope, while His saving power guarantees the ultimate security of those who belong to Him. Because He alone is our unmovable rock, sufficient salvation, and secure fortress, we can wait silently for Him, place our undivided hope in Him, and trust Him completely.
Applications
First, Wait Patiently Before God
“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence.” – Psalm 62:5a
David waited because God remained trustworthy, not because his enemies had disappeared. Patient waiting recognizes that God remains in control even when His actions are not yet visible. It submits every fear, desire, and timetable to His wisdom while expecting Him to fulfill His purposes.
Bring your unresolved concerns honestly before God. Resist the impulse to panic, retaliate, manipulate circumstances, or force an immediate solution. Continue fulfilling the responsibilities God has given you while patiently entrusting the outcome to His wisdom and timing.
Second, Fix All Your Hope upon God
“For my hope is from him.” – Psalm 62:5b
Biblical hope is confident expectation grounded in the character of God. People, abilities, resources, and circumstances remain limited and changeable, but God is always faithful, wise, powerful, and gracious. He remains the dependable source of hope regardless of what is visible.
Examine where you are placing your hope today. Do not build your confidence primarily upon people, influence, personal ability, resources, or favorable circumstances. Receive them gratefully when God provides them, but look beyond them to God Himself. Remember His faithfulness and confidently expect Him to accomplish His perfect will.
Third, Rest Securely in God’s Strength
“He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” – Psalm 62:6
God does not promise freedom from every pressure that may disturb His people. He promises to remain their unshakable foundation and secure refuge. Opposition, disappointment, loss, and uncertainty cannot ultimately overthrow those whose lives rest upon Him.
Identify whatever is presently causing you to feel unstable or vulnerable. Entrust it deliberately to God and remember that He is your rock, salvation, and fortress. Stand firmly upon His truth, obey what He has revealed, and face your responsibilities with confidence in His strength and faithfulness.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for reminding us today through Your Word that You alone are the dependable source of our hope, salvation, stability, and security. When our hearts become restless because of opposition or uncertainty, teach us to wait quietly before You and submit our concerns to Your wisdom and timing.
Fix our hope upon You rather than upon people, resources, abilities, or favorable circumstances. Thank You for giving us salvation and an unshakable foundation through Jesus Christ. Empower us through the Holy Spirit to stand firmly upon Your truth, fulfill our responsibilities faithfully, and rest securely in Your strength.
Be our rock, salvation, and fortress. Use our lives to display Your faithfulness and accomplish Your purposes for Your glory.
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
