Work Diligently, Prepare Wisely (Proverbs 6:6–8)

2026 Bible Reading: Proverbs 5–6

PRINCIPLE: Be wise: work diligently and prepare for future needs. (Proverbs 6:6–8)

“Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. ⁷ Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, ⁸ she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.” – Proverbs 6:6–8

Context

In Proverbs 6, Solomon warned against conduct that could bring hardship and ruin. After addressing the danger of becoming responsible for another person’s debt, he turned to the danger of laziness. He challenged the sluggard to observe the ant and learn wisdom from her work (Proverbs 6:1–8).

Proverbs 6:9–11 revealed the sluggard’s habit of postponing work for a little more sleep and rest. Such neglect could eventually leave him without the resources he needed. In contrast to this pattern of delay, Solomon presented the ant as an example of diligence, initiative, and timely preparation (Proverbs 6:6–8).

Exposition

Solomon commanded, “Go to the ant, O sluggard” (Proverbs 6:6a). The word translated “sluggard” (Hebrew: ʿāṣēl) describes someone who is sluggish or lazy. Here, Solomon addressed a person who neglected necessary work. He directed this person to learn from a small creature whose conduct exposed his lack of diligence.

He continued, “consider her ways, and be wise” (Proverbs 6:6b). The ant’s “ways” (derek) referred to her behavior, particularly the activities described in the following verses. The sluggard was to observe how she worked and reflect on what her conduct could teach him. The expression “be wise” (ḥākam) meant to become wise. He was to learn from the ant’s example and put that wisdom into practice by changing his conduct.

Solomon then described the ant as working “without having any chief, officer, or ruler” (Proverbs 6:7). These terms referred to people who directed, organized, or exercised authority over others. The ant carried out her work without someone telling her when to begin or reminding her to keep working. Her example challenged the sluggard’s dependence on someone else to make him act.

The ant’s initiative served a clear purpose: “she prepares her bread in summer” (Proverbs 6:8a). The word translated “prepares” (kûn) meant to make ready, while “bread” referred more broadly to food. She worked during the season when food was available, making provision for her needs. Her diligence involved gathering food while it was available rather than postponing the work and procrastinating.

Solomon added, “and gathers her food in harvest” (Proverbs 6:8b). The word translated “gathers” (ʾāgar) referred to bringing in the harvest. The ant gathered available food during the harvest rather than letting the season pass without preparing for future needs. Her work demonstrated foresight: she gathered food while she could so that she would have provision when it was needed.

Therefore, Proverbs 6:6–8 called the sluggard to learn wisdom from the ant by undertaking necessary work without waiting for supervision and preparing for future needs while food was available.

Theological Reflection

Proverbs 6:6–8 teaches that wisdom expresses itself in working diligently without constant supervision and preparing for future needs. God directs His people to learn from the ant’s example of initiative and foresight. Learning this wisdom requires humility to recognize laziness and a willingness to change how responsibilities are fulfilled and future needs are prepared for. (Proverbs 1:7; Proverbs 8:33)

Such wisdom leads believers to fulfill their responsibilities without depending on constant reminders or supervision. Their work matters before God even when other people do not see it. Believers serve the Lord through sincere attention to the tasks entrusted to them, including ordinary responsibilities at home, at work, and in ministry. (Colossians 3:23–24; 1 Thessalonians 4:11–12)

Diligent work also includes preparing for foreseeable needs while opportunities remain available. The ant’s gathering illustrates the wisdom of using present resources thoughtfully. Believers can make plans and prepare responsibly while trusting God with the future and acknowledging that their plans remain subject to His will. (Proverbs 21:5; James 4:13–15)

God’s wisdom shapes both present work and preparation for future needs. A teachable person recognizes necessary responsibilities, takes initiative to fulfill them, and uses available opportunities wisely. God’s people honor Him by working diligently and preparing wisely for future needs.

Applications

First, Learn Wisdom from the Ant

“Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.” – Proverbs 6:6

Solomon commanded the sluggard to observe, reflect, and change. The ant’s example showed him the diligence he lacked. Learning wisdom required him to receive correction and respond through practical action.

Examine how you handle your daily responsibilities. Identify a task you have repeatedly postponed, and consider what your delay reveals. Receive God’s instruction with humility, and make a specific change in how you approach that responsibility today.

Second, Work without Being Told

“Without having any chief, officer, or ruler.” – Proverbs 6:7

The ant performed her work without someone directing each step. Her example showed that wise conduct included taking initiative. We demonstrate responsibility when we recognize what needs to be done and carry it out faithfully.

Attend to your duties without waiting for repeated reminders. Complete an unfinished task, follow through on a commitment, or address a need within your responsibility. Give the same care to your work when no one is watching as you would when someone is supervising you.

Third, Prepare for Future Needs

“She prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.” – Proverbs 6:8

The ant gathered food while it was available. Her diligence included preparing for future needs during the harvest. Wisdom recognizes the need to act while the opportunity is available rather than postponing necessary work.

Consider the future needs you can prepare for in your household, work, or ministry. Set aside resources, prepare for an upcoming responsibility, or begin work that will require time to complete. Pray for wisdom, take the practical steps available to you, and entrust the outcome to God.
