Known and Valued by God (Luke 12:6–7)

2026 Bible Reading: Luke 11–12

PRINCIPLE: Do not fear, for God knows and values you. (Luke 12:6–7)

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” – Luke 12:6–7

Context

As crowds gathered around Him, Jesus spoke first to His disciples. He warned them against the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and told them that what was concealed would eventually be revealed. They were to live and speak openly rather than hide their allegiance to Him (Luke 12:1–3).

Jesus then called them His friends and told them not to fear those who could kill the body but could do nothing more. They were to fear God, who held authority over their eternal destiny (Luke 12:4–5). Knowing that His disciples would face opposition, Jesus assured them of God’s attentive care through the examples of sparrows and the hairs on their heads (Luke 12:6–7).

Exposition

Jesus asked, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?” (Luke 12:6a). The word translated “penny” (Greek: assarion) was a Roman copper coin worth about one-sixteenth of a denarius. A denarius was equivalent to a laborer’s daily wage. Five sparrows could be bought for just two of these coins. Yet Jesus said, “And not one of them is forgotten before God” (Luke 12:6b). The word translated “forgotten” (epilanthanomai) can also convey being overlooked or neglected. Though people might give little thought to any one of these birds, not one escaped God’s notice.

Jesus then turned from the sparrows to His disciples: “Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered” (Luke 12:7a). The word translated “numbered” (arithmeō) means counted. Its perfect passive form presents the hairs as having been counted and remaining known, with God understood as the one who has counted them. Jesus was not drawing attention to hair for its own sake. He was assuring His disciples that God knew even the smallest details of their lives.

On that basis, Jesus commanded, “Fear not” (Luke 12:7b). He had just told His disciples to fear God rather than people who might oppose them (Luke 12:4–5). His command did not mean that they would never suffer. It meant that they could face opposition without being ruled by fear, knowing that God was fully aware of their circumstances.

Jesus concluded, “You are of more value than many sparrows” (Luke 12:7b). The word translated “of more value” (diapherō) expresses a comparison of worth. If God did not overlook even one inexpensive bird, how much more could His disciples trust Him to care for them? Therefore, Luke 12:6–7 assured Jesus’ disciples that God knew them personally and valued them deeply, giving them reason to follow and acknowledge Christ without fear.

Theological Reflection

Luke 12:6–7 teaches that God’s care extends even to creatures that people consider insignificant. Not one sparrow escapes His notice, regardless of its small market value. His attention does not rise or fall with human estimates of importance. The God who sees each sparrow also sees the circumstances His people face. (Psalm 147:9; Matthew 10:29)

God’s knowledge of His people is also personal and complete. The numbered hairs picture an intimacy that reaches beyond what anyone else could observe or count. No difficulty is hidden from Him, and no disciple is merely one among many in His sight. His people can approach Him with the assurance that they are fully known. (Psalm 139:1–4; Isaiah 49:15–16)

God’s attentive care and intimate knowledge give believers courage when faithfulness to Christ brings opposition. Jesus did not promise His disciples that following Him would spare them suffering. He assured them that they mattered to God even in the face of danger. Because God sees and values His people, fear of others need not govern their witness. (Luke 12:4–5; Acts 4:19–20)

God notices the sparrows, knows His disciples down to the smallest detail, and declares their greater value to Him. His care provides a firm basis for trusting Him and acknowledging Christ when doing so is difficult. Believers need not fear, for God knows and values them.

Applications

First, Trust in God’s Attentive Care

“And not one of them is forgotten before God.” – Luke 12:6b

Jesus used the sparrows to show that God overlooks none of His creatures. When a concern seems too small to mention, or a hardship leaves us feeling unseen, His words remind us that His attention does not depend on how significant our circumstances appear to others.

Bring your concerns to God in prayer, including the ones you have dismissed as unimportant. When you feel overlooked, remind yourself of what Jesus said about the sparrows. Trust God’s care as you face the responsibilities and uncertainties before you today.

Second, Rest in God’s Perfect Knowledge

“Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” – Luke 12:7a

God’s knowledge of us is thorough and personal. Jesus gave His disciples this assurance while preparing them for opposition. They could face difficult circumstances knowing that the God who called them saw and understood their situation.

Speak honestly to God about what troubles you. You do not need to explain your circumstances perfectly for Him to understand them. Rest in His knowledge of you, and seek His wisdom for the next step He wants you to take.

Third, Witness for Christ Without Fear

“Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” – Luke 12:7b

Jesus’ assurance of God’s care supported His call for the disciples to acknowledge Him openly. Their courage did not depend on a promise that people would accept their witness. It rested on the God who knew and valued them.

Do not let fear of rejection keep you from speaking truthfully about Christ. Ask God for wisdom and gentleness as you share His Word, and leave the response to Him. Be faithful in the conversation or opportunity He gives you.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for reminding us today through Your Word that You do not overlook even a sparrow, and You know and value us deeply. Thank You for Your attentive care when we feel unseen and for Your intimate knowledge when we cannot fully express what troubles us.

Help us bring our concerns to You and rest in Your care. Empower us through the Holy Spirit to show and share the love and gospel of Jesus with wisdom, gentleness, and courage, even when we fear rejection. Use our words and our lives to make Him known and to bring glory to You.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
