Make Every Opportunity Count (Ephesians 5:15–16)
2026 Bible Reading: Ephesians 4–6
PRINCIPLE: Walk wisely and make the most of every opportunity. (Ephesians 5:15–16)
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” – Ephesians 5:15–16
Context
Paul urged the believers in Ephesus to live in a manner worthy of their calling. They were no longer to live as they once had but to put off their former way of life, be renewed in their minds, and put on the new self. He then showed what this change should look like in their speech, relationships, and conduct (Ephesians 4:1, 17–32).
As God’s beloved children, they were to walk in love and live as children of light. They were to discern what pleased the Lord and have no part in the unfruitful works of darkness. After calling them to wake from spiritual complacency, Paul urged them to pay close attention to how they lived and to make good use of the opportunities before them (Ephesians 5:1–16).
Exposition
Paul began, “Look carefully then how you walk” (Ephesians 5:15a). The word “walk” (Greek: peripateō) referred here to their pattern of conduct, not physical movement. “Carefully” (akribōs) called for close attention to how they lived. In light of Paul’s preceding instructions, believers were to consider whether their words, relationships, and choices reflected love and light or resembled the sinful conduct he had warned them to leave behind.
He clarified the standard for such care: “not as unwise but as wise” (Ephesians 5:15b). The wise did not simply avoid obvious wrongdoing. They discerned what pleased the Lord and acted on that understanding. This meant speaking truthfully, putting away bitterness and harmful speech, walking in love, and refusing the sexual immorality, greed, and corrupt talk Paul had just condemned. The unwise failed to apply God’s truth to these ordinary choices (Ephesians 4:25–5:10).
Paul then described wise conduct as “making the best use of the time” (Ephesians 5:16a). The expression translated “making the best use” (exagorazō) conveyed taking full advantage of what was available. “Time” (kairos) referred here especially to an opportunity or fitting occasion. Paul urged believers to recognize occasions to do what pleased the Lord and to act before those occasions passed. His concern went beyond filling every hour with activity; a busy person could still miss an opportunity to speak truth, show love, or do good.
The urgency of this instruction came from the fact that “the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16b). Paul had already warned his readers about sinful conduct and the works of darkness. In such a setting, opportunities to obey could be overlooked, while the surrounding evil could draw them away from the Lord’s will.
Therefore, Ephesians 5:15–16 calls believers to examine their conduct in light of God’s will, respond wisely to opportunities to do good, and remain faithful amid evil days.
Theological Reflection
Ephesians 5:15–16 teaches that wise living requires careful attention to conduct. God’s Word gives believers a standard by which to examine their words, relationships, and choices. Wisdom becomes evident when knowledge of what pleases the Lord shapes daily life. (Ephesians 4:23–24; Ephesians 5:8–10)
Such wisdom recognizes that opportunities to obey are valuable and often brief. An ordinary conversation, a responsibility at home, or a need within the church may become an occasion to love, serve, or speak truth. Faithfulness involves recognizing these occasions and responding while they remain open. (Galatians 6:10; Colossians 4:5)
Because evil is present in the world, discernment must be accompanied by watchfulness. Sinful attitudes and practices can appear acceptable when they become familiar. Believers must remain grounded in God’s truth so that the surrounding culture does not determine their conduct. (Romans 12:2; Ephesians 5:11)
Wise living therefore brings careful conduct, timely action, and resistance to evil together. Those who discern what pleases the Lord can make the most of present opportunities while remaining faithful to Him.
Applications
First, Live Life Intentionally
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise.” – Ephesians 5:15
Paul called believers to pay attention to their pattern of conduct. Careful living means bringing particular choices under the light of God’s Word, including the way they speak, treat others, and respond to temptation.
Examine your conduct today. Speak truthfully, refuse harmful talk, and consider whether your decisions show love for God and others. Where you recognize a habit that does not please the Lord, take a specific step to change it.
Second, Seize Each Opportunity
“Making the best use of the time.” – Ephesians 5:16a
Wise living involves recognizing an opportunity to please God while it is still before us. Some opportunities come through planned responsibilities; others arise when someone needs encouragement, help, or a faithful word.
Notice the people and responsibilities God has placed before you today. Give needed attention to your family, follow through on work entrusted to you, and act when you can serve someone. When an appropriate moment comes to speak about Christ, respond with courage and care.
Third, Guard Yourself against Evil
“Because the days are evil.” – Ephesians 5:16b
Paul’s warning explains why careful living is necessary. Sin can become easier to accept when it is common in the surrounding culture or familiar in daily life. Believers need discernment to recognize what draws them away from the Lord’s will.
Be alert to attitudes, conversations, and practices that weaken your obedience to Christ. Reject what draws you toward darkness, even when others accept it. Stay grounded in God’s Word and choose what pleases Him.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for reminding us today through Your Word that our daily choices matter and that the opportunities before us are precious. Thank You for giving us new life in Christ and calling us to live in a way that pleases You. Help us pay careful attention to our words, relationships, and decisions.
Give us wisdom to recognize opportunities to love, serve, and speak faithfully, and courage to act while those opportunities are before us. Guard us against the evil around us and the habits that draw us away from Your will. Guide and strengthen us through the Holy Spirit so that we may use each day You give us for Your purposes and glory.
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
